Claret Ash

Claret Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia ‘Raywood’) is a variety of ash originally discovered in the Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia. Today, it is widely grown throughout temperate parts of Australia as a street, park and garden tree.

The timber is generally pale cream to light brown, often displaying strong grain, darker streaks and occasional rippled figure. Claret Ash turns beautifully with sharp tools, cuts cleanly and sands to a smooth finish. Its strength and attractive grain make it an excellent choice for bowls, platters, hollow forms, spindle work and decorative projects.

Claret Ash also takes oils, waxes and other finishes extremely well, helping bring out the natural depth and character of the grain.

Please note: Timber is a natural product, so colour, grain and figure will vary between pieces. These blanks are individually cut and may have a size variation of up to 5mm.
