Zebrawood (Zebreli) Bowl Blank 180 x 50mm
Zebrali, also known as Zebrano, comes from tropical West Africa, mainly Gabon, Cameroon and Congo. It is harvested from large Microberlinia brazzavillensis trees and is instantly recognisable with its striking pale golden to cream background streaked with dark brown to black zebra-like stripes. The timber is medium to heavy in density, with a coarse texture and interlocked grain that can make it a bit tricky to work with. For woodturning it can be both rewarding and challenging.
The bold striping makes it an eye-catching choice for bowls, pens and other feature pieces, and it takes a polish and finish very well. However, the interlocked grain means tear-out and chipping are common if tools aren’t kept razor sharp, and care is needed to avoid movement or warping if the wood isn’t dried correctly. It’s often better suited to turners with a bit more experience.
