Poplar is a hardwood that is native to many regions across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. In North America, it is primarily found in the eastern United States and Canada, where it thrives in moist, well-drained soils. The most commonly used poplar species for woodturning is the Eastern Poplar, also known as Yellow Poplar or Tulipwood (Liriodendron tulipifera), though other species like Black Poplar and European Poplar are also utilized in different regions.

The tree typically grows in a variety of climates but is most commonly seen in areas that have a temperate climate. Poplar trees are known for their rapid growth, which contributes to their wide availability as a material. They can grow quite tall, often reaching heights of 50 to 150 feet, with straight trunks that make them ideal for timber production. Because of its availability and quick growth, poplar is often used in the production of low-cost furniture, veneer, and other wood products.
