Musk Burl

Musk Burl is one of Australia’s rarer and more difficult-to-source burl timbers. Native Musk (Olearia argophylla) grows as a small understory tree in cool, wet forests and rainforest margins throughout Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

While the Musk tree itself is not considered rare, genuine usable burl is extremely uncommon. The trees are generally small, not every tree develops a burl, and large, solid pieces suitable for woodworking are particularly difficult to find.

Musk Burl can feature beautiful creamy-gold and warm brown colouring, dark swirling lines, tight burl eyes and striking fiddleback or quilted figure. Its fine texture and incredible natural detail make it perfect for bowls, boxes, hollow forms, handles, jewellery, carving, resin work and special feature pieces.

Every piece is completely unique and may contain natural bark inclusions, small cracks and voids. This is a genuinely special Australian burl that does not become available very often.

Please note: As these pieces are individually cut, measurements may vary by up to 5mm.
